Coccyzus americanus
Order: Cuculiformes
Family: Cuculidae (Cuckoos)
This elegant “rain crow” feeds voraciously on hairy caterpillars of various species, and is often drawn to the big tents of “web worms” or “tent caterpillars.” Its habit of calling before rain gave it its nickname. Related to roadrunners and anis, it has zygodactylous feet (2 toes in front and 2 behind). Its long tail and slender body give it a distinct profile when perched or in flight.
