Icterus pectoralis
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Icteridae (Troupials and Allies)
The Spot-breasted Oriole, native to southwestern Mexico and Central America, was introduced in the Miami area in the late 1940s and became established in southern Florida. I saw them once, in 2017, in Costa Rica, where they belong, but in upscale neighborhoods outside Miami in both 1997 and 2023. In natural habitats, they’re found in tropical woodlands, edges, and semi-open areas with hedges and scattered tall trees. In Florida, they’re found in neighborhoods with flowering and fruiting trees. Like many other tropical orioles, males and females look alike.
