Onychoprion fuscatus
Order: Charadriiformes
Family: Laridae (Gulls, Terns, and Skimmers)
I’ve seen Sooty Terns only once, when I visited the Dry Tortugas in 1997, and have no photos. This bird has an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records:
Sooty Tern: Most airborne bird. The most airborne of all birds is the sooty tern (Onychoprion fuscatus). After leaving the nesting grounds as a youngster, it remains aloft for 3–10 years while maturing, settling on water from time to time before returning to land to breed as an adult.
