Gallus gallus
Order: Galliformes
Family: Phasianidae (Pheasants, Grouse, and Allies)
This species is the wild parent species of almost all domesticated chickens. The Red Junglefowl that run about all over Key West, Florida, are certainly genuinely wild birds now–their genetics seem similar to those of domesticated chickens from Spain, suggesting that these birds have probably been running loose in Florida since the time of the Spanish conquistadors. Red Junglefowl are considered established on Kauai in Hawaii.
