Melanerpes erythrocephalus
Order: Piciformes
Family: Picidae (Woodpeckers)
This stunning woodpecker feeds on acorns, and often sallies out to catch flying insects. It’s exceptionally vulnerable to automobile collisions and to competition for nest sites from European Starlings. I wrote quite a lot about it on this blog post.
