Quelea quelea
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Ploceidae (Weavers and Allies)
I saw this abundant bird in Uganda several times, but usually at a distance. It has a place in the Guinness Book of World Records:
Red-billed Quelea: Most abundant wild bird. The most abundant bird is the red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea), a seed-eating weaver of the drier parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, which has an estimated adult breeding population of 1.5 billion. At least 200 million of these ‘feathered locusts’ are slaughtered annually without having any impact on this number.
