Dryocopus pileatus
Order: Piciformes
Family: Picidae (Woodpeckers)
North America’s largest surviving woodpeckers depend on old trees for grubs; many individuals have also figured out how to exploit bird feeding stations. Pileated Woodpeckers have been one of my favorite species for many reasons for a long time, and so it’s thrilling for me to live in a neighborhood where they visit my backyard fairly frequently. One banded male in particular has been extremely approachable since I first noticed him in November 2021. “BB” has given me some extraordinarily lovely photo ops.
Having problems with woodpeckers? Check out some ways to solve the problem.
