Anas platyrhynchos
Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae (Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl)
This quintessential duck breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Europe, Asia, and North Africa; it’s been introduced to New Zealand, Australia, much of tropical South America, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa. It’s the parent species of Pekin ducks and most other domesticated breeds, so Donald and Daisy Duck and Donald’s nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie are all Mallards.
