Zonotrichia querula
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Emberizidae (Buntings and New World Sparrows)
This exquisite sparrow is a regular migrant through Duluth, but trickier to find in most of the Midwest as it flies from its wintering range in Texas through Kansas to northern Canada. Its plaintive song has elements of the songs of its close relatives, the White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows, but is pure and simple. Unlike its relatives, it looks entirely different in spring than in fall.
