Centrocercus urophasianus
Order: Galliformes
Family: Phasianidae (Pheasants, Grouse, and Allies)
This extraordinary bird of sagebrush country in the West has one of the most spectacular, and bizarre, courtship displays in the bird world. Males gather in leks, displaying to one another as females saunter by, mating with their favorites.
Being a favorite of hunters and falconers is not the reason sage grouse are disappearing—it’s their need for sagebrush, and their antipathy for any tall structures anywhere near where they live.
