Colaptes rubiginosus
Order: Piciformes
Family: Picidae (Woodpeckers)
This fairly common woodpecker is found in Mexico and throughout Central America into much of South America, in a very wide variety of landscapes, mostly semi-open to dense, from dry tropical thornscrub to humid rainforest, including cloudforest, oak-pine woodland, dry deciduous forest, riparian thickets, and mangroves. It’s often found along the edges of forest, in scattered trees within clearings, and in shade-grown coffee plantations. I’ve seen it in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.
