Zonotrichia atricapilla
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Emberizidae (Buntings and New World Sparrows)
This lovely sparrow winters along the Pacific Coast (with at least two breaking the monotony by visiting Duluth!) and breeds on the tundra. Researchers have spent very little time or effort studying breeding Golden-crowned Sparrows, so little is known about it, though some individuals are surprisingly easy to see during the nesting season. They’re familiar backyard birds in their winter range.
