Trogon elegans
Order: Trogoniformes
Family: Trogonidae (Trogons)
This shockingly elegant tropical bird is found in Mexico down to Guatemala, with some reaching southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico—it’s one of the most sought-after species by birders in Arizona. It breeds in oak and sycamore forests, nesting in woodpecker cavities, especially those excavated by flickers and Acorn Woodpeckers. The word trogon comes from a Greek word for “gnawer,” and was given to this group of insectivores for the way they seem to chew their large insect prey with their hooked bill.
