Peucaea cassinii
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Emberizidae (Buntings and New World Sparrows)
This subtly beautiful sparrow with the song described as having an “indescribable sweetness and pathos” is furtive most of the year, but during the breeding season males sing on exposed perches and take off to sing in flight in conspicuous skylarking displays. The species belongs to the same genus as Botteri’s and Bachman’s Sparrows, and shares their drab plumage.
