Peucaea botterii
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Emberizidae (Buntings and New World Sparrows)
This plain, drab sparrow of Mexican grasslands barely makes it into the United States in southeastern Arizona and south Texas; loss of coastal grasslands in Mexico are putting it more at risk there than in the United States, where numbers are currently stable.
Botteri’s Sparrow is hard to distinguish visually from Cassin’s Sparrow, but the songs are different. Botteri’s Sparrow often preys on grasshoppers.
