Family: Strigidae (Owls)
This little owl, usually near the top on lists of birders’ “most wanted species,” appears in fairly large numbers during “irruptions,” but is otherwise secretive and hard to find. The call is a loud, ringing Hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo! with the rhythm of a winnowing snipe.
