Amphispiza bilineata
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Emberizidae (Buntings and New World Sparrows)
This extremely attractive sparrow lives in open, shrubby deserts; it’s common in canyons, desert washes, and desert scrub with creosote, ocotillo, cholla, acacia, sagebrush, mesquite, and rabbitbrush, and can even be found up to 7,000 feet in pinyon-juniper forests. It feeds mostly on the ground, taking high-protein insects during the breeding season and mostly on seeds the rest of the year.
