Vireo atricapilla
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Vireonidae (Vireos, Shrike-Babblers, and Erpornis)
Our tiniest vireo is also our most vulnerable; it’s one of the first species to be placed on the Endangered Species List. Much of the seminal research about this bird in Oklahoma in the 1970s and 1980s was by Joseph Grzybowski.
The Black-capped Vireo is one of Laura’s personal Top Ten birds. She wrote a species profile of this adorable little mite for Birder’s World magazine (now BirdWatching) in 2011.
