Picoides arcticus
Order: Piciformes
Family: Picidae (Woodpeckers)
The Black-backed Woodpecker (once known as the Arctic Three-toed Woodpecker) specializes on burnt forests, feeding on the wood-boring beetles that feed on newly burnt wood. It softly pecks in the crevices of bark to flake it off, to get at the bugs beneath.
The male’s yellow cap can be surprisingly difficult to see from many angles, yet from the right angles is beautifully conspicuous.
