Spinus tristis
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Fringillidae (Finches, Euphonias, and Allies)
The state bird of Iowa, New Jersey, and Washington can be rare or abundant in winter in any given area. Goldfinches are very hardy, and can survive extreme temperatures if they have enough food. Females do not survive nearly as long as males; the reasons are not understood, but adult males significantly outnumber adult females even though the sex ratio is pretty even in juveniles.
